For the 5th week in a row, Giants has moved up the Americana Music Association album airplay chart! Giants is also currently on the 3 other major American charts that monitor roots music airplay: The Roots Music Report (#37), the Freeform Americana Roots Chart (#13), and the FolkDJ List (#7). In Europe, it is moving up the EuroAmericana Chart (#6) and the Roots Radio Report (#12). We tell you this NOT because we like to toot our own little horn (ok, yeah we do) BUT because we need your help. If you know of a radio program or station in your area that features Americana/Folk/Roots music, please call them up and request your favorite song from Giants. Americana format music is mainly found on community, college, and public radio stations. If they don't have the CD in their station library, let us know at donroy@mindspring.com and we'll remedy the situation. Who knows? With LOTS of help from all of you WISE and GOOD people, we could keep on climbin'.

Giants Making Waves --August 23, 2005/Nashville, TN Building on the critical success of 2003’s We Built a Fire, songwriter Donal Hinely returns with the timely and provocative Giants, a stirring new album driven by memorable images and well-crafted songs. Like recent offerings by Todd Snider and Steve Earle, Hinely strives to reach beyond politics and unlock the common human experience. From the acoustic folk of the title track to the roots rock of "Before Music was a Product" to the raw country of "Blue Ink," Giants is a journey that resonates with both head and heart. Nashville producer/cellist David Henry (Josh Rouse, Cowboy Junkies, Vienna Teng) ties together this diverse mix of songs with his lush, trademark sound and guitarist Will Kimbrough (Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider) adds tasteful accompaniment, showing why he continues to be one of the most sought after session men in the country. Hinely is also a noted practitioner of the glass harmonica and plays a homemade set of 24 water-tuned wine glasses and brandy snifters. He picked up the instrument when his older brother Terry--a master of the rare art and long time musical partner--was killed by a reckless driver in Dallas. Track 5, "The Shakes," provides a musically unique moment as the glasses accompany ukulele, cello, and drums.

"I can’t recommend it highly enough to lovers of pure, organic music - Donal’s a great storyteller who should be up there with Steve Earle and company"--Playing Out Loud

Hinely left his hometown of Denton, Texas for Nashville in 1994 and has since garnered recognition in the songwriting community for his original perspective and honest performances. The Indie Acoustic Project honored We Built a Fire alongside Rodney Crowell's Houston Kid and Kate Campbell's Monuments as the best Americana album of the year in 2003. The CD features a stellar lineup including Kim Richey, Mindy Smith, Will Kimbrough, and members of Wilco, the Edwin McCain Band, and Hayseed Dixie. Hinely has gained experience in the streets and pubs of the world, once taking his guitar and a one-way ticket to Australia and working his way back home through Asia and the capitals of Europe. Now more commonly he takes his music to festivals, special events, and the Bluebird Cafe stage in Nashville, Tennessee

"Giants" One of Five Finalists at Great Waters Folk Festival --July 29-31, 2005/Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire The title track to Donal Hinely's new CD was selected as one of five finalists from among hundreds of entries at the Great Waters Folk Festival song contest. The festival, showcasing the talents of top acts such as Nanci Griffith, Chris Smither, Richard Shindell, Ellis Paul, and Christine Lavin, is held every year on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. The folk legend Odetta was originally scheduled to headline the festival but could not make it for health reasons. At the last minute, Cheryl Wheeler filled the spot and brought the house/tent down. Donal had a great time escaping the heat of Middle Tennessee and getting a chance to meet some of the leading lights in folk music. He was especially taken with the wit and warmth of Christine Lavin. The ultimate winner of the song contest was singer/songwriter (and all-around good guy) Craig Werth with the excellent song "Tiny Stars."
